Phase 1 Guard Card

Phase 1 Guard Card training (the 8-hour pre-assignment course) teaches the legal and practical basics of security work. It is the mandatory first step before applying for your unarmed security license with the state.

Description

1. Power to Arrest (3 Hours)
This module teaches the legal and practical boundaries of making a citizen's arrest as a security guard. 
  • Legal Limitations: Understanding your exact legal authority, which is generally that of a private citizen.
  • Guidelines: How to observe, document, and report incidents safely without putting yourself in danger or violating civil rights.
  • Assessment: You will take a written examination at the end of this course and must achieve a 100% passing score (instructors can review answers with you until you pass). 
 
2. Appropriate Use of Force (5 Hours)
This module covers de-escalation and the acceptable levels of force you are allowed to use when interacting with the public. 
  • De-escalation: Verbal communication skills, conflict resolution, and diffusing volatile situations.
  • Use of Force Continuum: Understanding when force is justifiable (e.g., self-defense) and what levels of force are legally acceptable versus excessive.
